Sometimes photographing a group or family with a lot of people make a bit of a problem. Photographing a group or family has its own tricks to produce a beautiful photo. Taking great professional studio portraits requires the photographer to think about many different factors and below are a few examples of the techniques used by many professionals.
1. Think in terms of triangles.
When posing groups or families try to arrange them in triangles. Geometric shapes such as triangles and diamonds are more visually appealing and having close triangles can create real intimacy within a group. If you have more than three subjects think in terms of larger triangles or sub triangles and arrange the group accordingly. This triangles/diamonds rule can also be applied to portraits of people on their own. When you look at the famous “Mona Lisa” you can see that her head, body and hands form a diamond shape which is very balanced and easy on the viewers eye.

Shooting babies is one of the most difficult types of photography, due to the fact that young children, babies, are not capable of holding a steady pose. As an amateur picture taker and not a professional and even getting your own children to pose can be a major affair. More succinctly, children just seem to not be willing to cooperate.
Consider that the most important rule when photographing children is that they are the boss and are not usually prone to be still and cooperative. The total camera shoot must necessarily be around that frail moment that requires infinite patience from the photographer. Even so, there are certain cunning or skilfull acts that must be a part of the skillful child photographer.
A baby responds well and proper if they are not hungry, rested and well toileted. Furthermore, they respond as expected when shown complete attention. In the very beginning, mom and dad must attend to all the aforementioned necessities to assure a happy child. However, that may not be an entirely simple task. The appointed hour of the photo shoot may not match baby’s mood and will be a trying and difficult for both parent and photographer.
For these and many more reasons, every effort should be taken to avoid any shots in a studio. If at all possible. the shoot should be at home because baby will be much more comfortable in a familiar setting. The surrounding is familiar as well as sound and smells. Getting that priceless smile or comfortable expressions come much easier when at home. Of course, this entails a “house” call by the photographer with all the misery of hauling equipment, lights and cameras to the home. If the photographer truly wants that priceless shot of baby, the extra work may be totally worthwhile.
