What is a polariser? And how to use it? A polariser is an essential addition to any photographer’s kit bag. The filter may look like a simple piece of grey glass, but its effect can be far more impressive, adding extra punch and colour saturation to your images. The classic use for a polariser is darkening blue skies, but they can also reduce reflections and increase the overall colour saturation of your shots. The effect of a polariser varies as you rotate the filter, so most versions are circular and come in a mount that allows you to move the filter once it is fitted to the lens. Lee Filters produces a square polariser for its filter system, but the more useful type is a screw-in version that attaches to the front of the Lee Filters holder using a 105mm adapter ring.

Although almost all polarisers are circular in shape, they actually come in two types that are confusingly called linear and circular. This name describes the way that the filters work, rather than their shape, and which type you need depends on your camera. If your camera has autofocus or spot (or multi-segment) metering you need to use a circular polariser. For older manual models you can use the cheaper linear type, although you can also use the circular type and the effect is the same. So, if you use a digital SLR make sure you’re using a circular polariser to ensure that your camera will work properly!

Knowing how these filters work relies on a little knowledge about how light behaves, so here comes the science bit. Normal light behaves like a wave, but vibrates in all directions. But some light - such as blue skies or reflections from non-metallic objects - is polarised, so that the waves all vibrate on the same plane. A polariser works by only letting through light vibrating in a particular plane, so you can either block polarised light from reaching the sensor or let it through. A polarising filter can be rotated independently of the lens to control which light passes through and which is blocked. This can be tricky to see through the camera, but move the filter slowly and look out for blue skies darkening and lightening as you go. How you position the filter is down to personal preference, although there are some problems to watch out for that we’ll cover later on.

Are they just for blue skies? No!Although darkening blue skies is the most common use for polarisers, they are also great for removing reflections from non-metallic subjects and also increasing overall colour saturation. For landscapes the ability to ’see’ through water by removing reflections is handy, although you need to position the polariser carefully if you still want to darken the sky.A polariser can also be used as a makeshift overall neutral density filter, as they also reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor. This will allow you to use slower shutter speeds or wider apertures than without the filter in place, although the amount of light reduction will vary between 1 and 3 stops depending on the position of the filter and the amount of polarised light from the subject.

While the effect of a polariser is useful for many shots, there are also times when hey either have little effect on the image or the result can look unnatural. As we’ve already mentioned, they also reduce the amount of light reaching the sensor, so in low light you will find that the shutter speeds will be too long to handhold the camera, or you have to use a wider aperture than you want.

As the amount of polarised light in blue skies varies depending on both the position of the sun and the amount of pollution in the air, the effect of a polariser can lead to some unwanted results. The most common when using wide-angle lenses is an uneven effect across the frame. Blue sky is most polarised at right angles to the position of the sun. So if it is a clear day and your shot includes a wide area of sky you can find that using a polariser will make the area at 90 degrees to the sun much darker than those nearer or opposite it. This can make the sky look uneven and unnatural. A similar effect can also happen when the sky is very clear, especially if you are shooting from a high hill or mountain as the light is so clear it can go almost black if you use a polariser! So avoid using them in these conditions. (source: Your-Digital-Photography.com)

The Digital Photography Book . Scott Kelby, the man who changed the “digital darkroom” forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography–how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today’s top digital pros use (and it’s easier than you’d think).

This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, ‘Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?’ I wouldn’t stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I’d just say, ‘Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.’ You d say, ‘OK,’ and you’d get the shot. That’s what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak.”

This isn’t a book of theory—it isn’t full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade” to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here’s another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There’s never been a book like it, and if you’re tired of taking shots that look “OK,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you.

How to Finding Good Quality Wood Picture Frames? Wood picture frames are the natural choice for framing valuable art work and photographic prints; they provide a warmth and luster that goes with virtually any décor, and are available in numerous styles as kits and as ready-made frames. There are many different finishes and types of wood to choose from; however, it’s important to understand that good quality wood picture frames are only one component of the frame project.

Proper framing requires a number of different picture framing supplies in addition to your basic wood picture frames, including mount board, mat board, hanging materials and glazing. This is also true incidentally of photo framing supplies, and even more important when it comes to protecting the print. Ultimately, that is what framing supplies are really about: protecting the quality of your painting or photo from the elements and environmental pollutants, UV light and acids that can cause the m to become faded or discolored.

In addition to a good frame, one of the framing supplies you’ll need is archival quality mount board. This is what holds your artifact (painting or photo) upright and rigid. The image is then sandwiched between this and the mat board, which serves as a barrier that prevents the artifact from coming in direct contact with the glazing (the clear sheet of glass or acrylic that is placed over the artifact). These two picture framing supplies are the heart of the framing job. In order to affix the artifact to these surfaces, you have a few different options here – but spray or brush-on adhesives are definitely not among them. It is preferable to use photo corners or tissue hangers. The latter are also available as photo framing supplies, and act like mild double-stick tape.

Whatever you do, its important to spring for the best quality framing supplies you can afford. Cheap, inferior picture framing supplies will not only fail to protect your artifacts properly, they’ll make for a poor display as well. Good, archival-quality framing supplies will mean a larger initial investment, but it is an investment that will quickly pay for itself. We cannot emphasize this enough: purchase only high quality picture framing supplies.

Wood picture frames are exceptionally attractive in almost any setting, but only when the other materials have been taken into consideration. A properly framed picture is like an organic life form; it’s outward appearance depends on how healthy it is inside. Use the best materials for mounting, matting and glazing, and you’ll have made the best use of your wood picture frames.

How to Prevent and Avoiding Digital Camera Shakes. If ever you have seen a picture that is blurred, it is most probably because the camera was shaken while the picture was taken. With traditional photographic film cameras, it was evident only after the negatives and positives were made. However, with digital camera, the captured image can be seen immediately on the LCD screen, and if the image has shaken, then it can be discarded for a new shot.

Digital camera shakes are common with new users. This is primarily because, new users have not fully understood that the shutter-release button must not be pressed twice, but pressed two steps down. The first step locks the focus and exposure while the second step takes the photo. This pressing of the button has to be smooth, otherwise the digital camera shakes and a blurred picture is the result.

The shutter speed also plays an important role in blurring the picture. The shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter remains open to allow light to reach the digital camera sensor. It is measured in seconds or fractions of a second. An image is exposed by the combination of the lens aperture and the shutter speed. A slow shutter speed needs a small aperture (large F-stop number) to avoid over exposure. With a slow shutter speed below 1/60th of a second, over exposure is adequately controlled, but the digital camera is likely to vibrate more, giving a shaky picture.

A tripod is extremely useful to eliminate digital camera shakes. It is generally used by sports photographers who use long telephoto lens, as it helps in close-ups, landscape and panning shots, for timed exposures, for shooting at slow shutter speeds, and for taking photographs in low or dim light conditions. Shooting a fast moving subject, like athletes, or wildlife, tests the photographer`s skill and the equipment. In such cases, camera shakes are most likely to happen, and thus a monopod or a tripod is always used. Digital cameras mounted on tripods always tend to eliminate camera shakes and give sharp results.

A great feature in most high-end digital cameras available nowadays is image stabilization (IS). IS is an anti-shake and vibration reduction technology and is common in digital cameras with long telephoto zooms of 10X and 12X. With IS, sharp images can be obtained even if the camera shakes a little, a slow shutter speed is used, shooting is done in low light conditions, or a tripod is not used. IS was originally developed for video cameras. It is now available in interchangeable lens, consumer and professional digital cameras, which use optical image stabilization. Sports and wildlife photographers use a tripod and IS technology together to get the maximum sharpness of their photographs; however, many other photographers turn the IS feature off while using a tripod.

Digital camera shakes can be eliminated or minimized by the utilization of the above techniques. However, the fundamentals of taking a good shot prove to be most effective in avoiding camera shakes, in the absence of tripods, or IS technology.

The basics of good photography should be followed. You should hold the digital camera with both your hands. You should keep the legs apart with the knees slightly bent forward. Your elbows should be braced with your body and your body braced with some support, if possible. You should generally frame and compose the picture with the viewfinder and not the LCD screen. You should not jab but lightly press the shutter release button two steps down, and during that time, it would be beneficial to hold your breath to prevent any movement of the chest and hands. With this basic technique of good photography, you can be sure that your digital camera will not shake and no picture will be blurred.

A photogenic person is a person that usually appears physically attractive or striking in photographs. Being photogenic just comes naturally to some people, but there are a few things that anyone can do to look better in photos. Try out the tips and trick in this article to be photogenic person.

Suitable colors
Wear clothes with colors that suit you. Certain colors complement certain skin tones, while others tend to bring out the worst. Also take into consideration your hair color. You may have a feel for which colors you look best in, but if not, do some research (check out the external links below) and some trial-and-error.

Best Angle
Determine your best angle. Beyond the obvious hiding of blemishes, finding the right angle for your face can be a bit more difficult. The best thing you can do is experiment using a digital camera so that you can immediately see the results of each pose. It will very quickly become obvious which angles are most flattering for you, and you can then use that angle as much as possible in the future. The classic model’s pose is to arrange your body 3/4 toward the camera with one foot in front of the other and one shoulder closer to the camera than the other.

Double Chin
Get rid of a double chin. Tilt your head down slightly and try to position yourself so that the camera is a little above your eye level. This will hide a double chin fairly effectively. You can also put one hand under your chin as though you’re resting your head on your hand (keep the thumb side of your hand out of the camera’s view, if possible). Don’t actually rest any weight on the hand, however, or you will push the skin into an unflattering position. Also try resting your tongue against the roof of your mouth.

Stick your neck out
One trick models often use is to present a 3/4 pose to the camera (turn your head so that 3/4 of it is exposed to the camera, as opposed to a full frontal shot) and then lift your neck and slightly tilt your head down, as though you are a turkey sticking its head out (without actually thrusting your chin out). This improves facial definition and helps ameliorate wrinkles and flabby skin.

Just Relax
Many people end up looking odd in photos because they freeze into odd facial expressions with a “say cheese” type of smile on their face. If you’re used to having bad pictures taken of yourself, you probably get nervous in front of the camera, and this can make things even worse.

Smile with your eyes
Nothing projects happiness and beauty like smiling eyes: a happy, somewhat mischievous expression of the eyes. To achieve this effect, imagine that the camera is a person you have a crush on walking into the room. This will create wider open eyes and a relaxed smile. Chances are you unconsciously do this all the time; the trick is to be able to bring it out on demand, so practice the smiling eyes in front of a mirror.

When Lew French made his first stone fireplace at age nineteen, he didn’t expect to feel so drawn to the simple material. Twenty-eight years and countless projects later, he still feels awed by the presence stone has in a well-designed setting, whether it’s an artfully rendered remodel of a writer’s stone studio, a playful fireplace, or a carefully crafted garden pathway. This first collection of French’s work, filled with artistic inspiration for your own home or landscape, is a study in contrast: contemporary hearths of rustic slate, sculptured walls of both great granite slabs and stacked, rounded fieldstones. More than 130 gorgeous photographs by Alison Shaw illustrate the beauty of French’s pieces and invite you to see how rounded fieldstone, grey slate, rough granite, and even curvy driftwood, are incorporated into stunning pieces of functional art. Throughout, French narrates the charming stories behind the projects: how an idea came to be; how a stone-splitting technique is executed; even how one of his most difficult pieces, a three-year-long project, was saved from ruin just in the nick of time, the day it was completed. Stone by Design is the perfect inspiration for anyone interested in adding the beauty of stone to their own home or landscape. Lew French was born in a small farming town in southern Minnesota, called Zumbrota. He started to work with stone when he had a small construction crew right out of high school and built one or two houses a year. He moved to Martha’s Vineyard twenty years ago, and has since worked on his own stone designs exclusively. His work has been featured in many publications, including The New York Times and House Beautiful. French was also featured as a Modern Master on the premier season of “Modern Masters” in the House and Garden Network. French lives with his two sons, Asa and Truman. Alison Shaw is a fine-art and editorial photographer who lives and works on Martha’s Vineyard, which has provided the inspiration and subject matter for much of her color and black-and-white photography. Over 5000 of her original fine art prints are in public and private collections. Alison’s work appears regularly in Yankee Magazine, Martha’s Vineyard Magazine and Cape Cod Life. She teaches photography workshops for the Maine Photographic Workshops and Santa Fe Workshops. Alison lives with her family in Oak Bluffs.

Fine art quality, black-and-white prints are within every photographer’s reach with the techniques illustrated in this digital image editing guide. Taking advantage of the control and reproducibility that the digital darkroom offers, this handbook teaches photographers how to fine-tune images with contrast and exposure levels, crop and rotate images for dynamic results, and remove flaws such as dust and scratches long after the photograph has been taken. Instruction on techniques that simulate traditional hand coloring and tinting and add special effects such as frames, infrared, and lighting and lens effects helps photographers realize their artistic vision. Screen shots and images guide readers through the presented techniques, allowing photographers to gauge their own results and anticipate the effects of the outlined corrections and enhancements on their own images. A gallery of the author’s work provides inspiration for simulating—and improving upon—the chemical-based darkroom experience.

With 12.1 megapixels, you can create stunning, photo-quality prints up to A3+ (13×19-inch) size, or crop your images and still come away with high-resolution shots.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar Lens with 5x Optical Zoom
The professional-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer for great outdoor, sports, and travel photos.

Wide-angle lens
A 28mm wide angle lens shows more of the scene you’re shooting, helping you capture more complete images when shooting indoor group portraits, expansive landscapes, or architectural scenes.

3.0-inch Clear Photo LCD display (230k pixels)
Generous 3.0-inch (230K pixels) Clear Photo LCD display features sharp, natural color that makes it easy to compose shots, read menus, and view photos, even in bright sunlight.

BIONZ image processor
The BIONZ image processor delivers the high resolution and fast performance you expect from a Sony digital camera.

Intelligent Auto Mode
Unlike traditional auto mode, Intelligent Auto (iAuto) thinks for you, recognizing scenes, lighting conditions, faces, and adjusts settings resulting clear images, faces with natural skin tone and less blur. Take advantage of all the technology without leaving Auto mode. Take a picture from a kid on the playground, to landscape shots, to a beautiful flower or an indoor birthday party.

HD Movie
Capture more of your memories in high definition (720p) video. Record HD movies in 720p high definition MPEG4 format for stunning large-screen home movie playback. Record up to 29 min in 720p format (or up to 2GB) per movie.

Intelligent Scene Recognition
Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode automatically detects eight different types of scenes conditions (Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Twilight using a Tripod, Portrait, Landscape, and Macro) and within 1/30th of a second selects the appropriate camera settings. iSCN has 2 modes: Auto and Advanced. In Auto Mode, the camera takes a single shot using the optimal settings. In Advance Mode, the camera takes a photo with the standard automatic settings and, in difficult lighting (low light or back light) immediately takes a second photo with optimized setting so you can choose which to keep.

Face Detection technology
Face Detection technology detects up to eight individual faces and controls flash, focus, exposure, and white balance to deliver accurate, natural skin tones with reduced red-eye. It can also give priority to children or adults. Newly added Face Motion Detection adjusts ISO sensitivity and accelerates the shutter speed when facial movement is detected, reducing blur in the subjects face.

Priority Face Selection
Optimizing focus, exposure, and white balance for a specific face is easier now with selectable facial memory, even when the subject leaves the frame. This feature is perfect at weddings and other events the goal is always to focus on a certain person.

Anti-blink Function
It’s frustrating to think you’ve captured that perfect shot, only to review it later and discover one of your subjects blinked just as you pressed the shutter. The Anti-blink function works to help counter blinking and squinting. When the camera is set to Soft Snap, the Anti-blink function captures two images, recording only the photo with less squinting. If a blink is detected in other shooting modes, a warning will be displayed after you take the shot.

Red-eye Reductions
Helps reduce common red-eye problems. See detail and Buy at Amazon.com
